Raw Food Diet - Day Thirty-one

Friday, July 31, 2009

The last day!

I was quite surprised when I weighed myself this morning; I am down over 15 lbs since I started the raw food diet at the beginning of the month.

For breakfast I had a banana, 16 oz of orange juice, half a cup of walnuts, and a handful of almonds. I had a light lunch today; a GoRaw Live "Granola" Bar and more orange juice.

I went to the Giants game tonight so I brought some stuff with me: a bag each of Living Intentions Rosemary Garlic Pistachios & Almonds and Sun-Dried Marinara Almonds & Pistachios. Before the game I had more GT's Organic Raw Kombucha Divine Grape, a plum, and some tomatoes with cheese and crackers.

Raw Food Diet - Day Thirty

Thursday, July 30, 2009

I had a bigger breakfast today, a banana and grapefruit early and later a bowl of Cacao Crunch cereal and milk.

Lunch was kind of weird as we had our company picnic today. I grabbed a bunch of stuff and brought it along. Over the next couple hours I had a banana, a plum, a bottle of grapefruit juice and a bottle of GT's Organic Raw Kombucha Divine Grape.

I had a fairly light dinner tonight, partly because I was exhausted and partly because I had a fat upper lip from playing football at the picnic. I had an apricot, about 12 oz of orange juice, and a couple glasses of ice water.

When I weighed myself in the evening - normally I do this in the morning - I was a up just a tad.

Raw Food Diet - Day Twenty-nine

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

3 days and counting...

I am hovering around 13 lbs less than when the month began.

A typical breakfast today, cereal and milk, though I had to mix Living Intentions Cacao Crunch and Acai Blueberry as my supplies are getting low. I grabbed some fresh squeezed orange juice, too.

Around lunch time a coworker and I walked to Whole Foods to replenish my raw food stash. When I got back I cut up a mango, and had some flax krisps and a new raw cheese I found today: Organic Valley Wisconsin Raw Milk Cheese Jack-Style. I also had some GT's Organic Raw Kombucha. This time I tried Divine Grape, and it was actually very drinkable. Most of the other flavors I tried were not easy to drink at all so this was a great find. Kombucha is supposed to be very healthy for you. It does have 20% of the important B vitamins per serving so that is good.

I ate some random food for dinner again tonight. I had a Gopal's Carob-Quinoa Rawma Bar, some Living Intentions Rosemary Garlic Pistachios & Almonds, and a couple UliMana Hemp Nut Brownies. I also enjoyed a couple glasses of ice water and agave nectar.

Finishing up the fourth week on a raw food diet...

Cereal and milk for breakfast and some GoHunza Go Take A Hike raw trail mix a little later. For lunch we went to Nama Sushi where I had salmon and tuna sashimi with Osawa Raw Soy Sauce. When I got back I snacked on a couple UliMana Goji Cherry Truffles again.

For dinner I had a pickle, flax krisps and raw honey, cereal and milk, and a bottle of GT's Organic Raw Kombucha.

Raw Food Diet - Day Twenty-seven

Monday, July 27, 2009

Another Monday, another week of raw foodism. It's a lot better than that might sound.

For breakfast I had cereal and milk, as well as a banana and a grapefruit! I guess I am starting off the week hungry.

Just before lunch I snacked on some almonds. We went with one of our coworkers and his 2 year old daughter to Amici's. There isn't a lot on the menu for me so I just had some salad (romaine lettuce). When I got back to the office I had some chocolate treats, mainly UliMana Goji Cherry Truffles.

For dinner I did some more random stuff. Before softball I had a banana and pickle. When I got back I had cereal and milk with the usual fixings and washed it down with some delicious orange juice.

I went back to cereal and milk this morning. I added 5 tbsp each of flax seeds, hemp seeds, and goji berries.

For lunch I had the other half of yesterday's pineapple, a fresh pickle, another UliMana Hemp Nut Brownie, and half a Healing Springs Grape Kombucha (tea).

I had a light dinner tonight: the other half of the kombucha, UliMana Hemp Nut Brownie, and some Rainbow Grocery raw berry trail mix.

My weight is still hovering around 12 lbs below when I started the diet.

Raw Food Diet - Day Twenty-five

Saturday, July 25, 2009

I have been struggling a bit when buying fresh fruit. Often it is not ripe when you buy it so you have to leave it out for a couple days. This attracts fruit flies. Then you have to make sure to eat it during the small window during which it is ripe. There is also the act of transporting it carefully from the store/market back to your house so that it does not get bruised or cut.

This morning before I left the house I ate about a third of a nectarine that I had purchased a few days prior because it had started to go bad and had a couple bruises. I also enjoyed a banana on the way to the Noe Valley Farmers Market (with Nola). While there I had a Juicey Lucy's Ambrosia drink.

For lunch I snacked on a fresh pickle, some mulberries, and tried a Sandhya's Ayurvedic Health Food Rejuvenation Ball. It was pretty good. Of course I washed it down with water and agave nectar.

We had friends over for dinner (and Wii). I had some Living Intentions Sun-Dried Marinara Almonds & Pistachios to snack on; they are so yummy and others agreed. I had cheese and tomatoes, cut up and ate half a pineapple, and a couple kiwi fruit. I also enjoyed some fresh squeezed orange juice and then for dessert I tried a UliMana Hemp Nut Brownies.

Again I decided to forgo cereal and milk today for breakfast and had a plum, two kiwi fruits, and grapefruit juice.

For lunch I went to the Farmers Market at the Metreon to find the Alive! stand only to find out they were not there anymore because they were not making enough money. We went to Samovar Tea Lounge instead. I had some great tea and then a strawberry. When I got back to the office I had a handful of almonds.

I had an odd dinner tonight. Two Raweos, an ounce of Living Intentions Sun-Dried Marinara Almonds & Pistachios, a Gopal's Carob-Quinoa Rawma Bar, and some orange juice.

When I weighed myself at home this morning I was at my lowest point so far - down over 13 lbs in just over 3 weeks. What's hard to believe is that I have been eating more calories every day and yet I am still losing weight.

I decided to skip the cereal for breakfast this morning and had a banana, a plum and some grapefruit juice instead.

For lunch we went to Nama Sushi. I brought in my Nama Shoyu (raw soy sauce). When I got back I had some orange juice and then some raw chocolate treats (UliMana Goji Cherry Truffles).

We had dinner at Andrew and Kerry's tonight. I cut up a mango, had cheese and crackers, cheese and tomato with salt, and had some sauerkraut.

Milk and cereal - today I tried Living Intentions Acai Blueberry - for breakfast and then some fresh squeezed orange juice. For lunch I had a banana and cut up a mango. Using a dull knife on a mango that is slightly overripe was extremely frustrating. I will see if I can get these knives at work sharpened.

I had a somewhat pick-and-choose dinner. I started with a handful of Incan "Golden" Berries (aka Cape Gooseberry, the Goldenberry or the Incan berry). I do not really care for their sour taste all that much. After that I had a Gopal's Happy Herb Bar with Maca. Then I had a bowl of cereal and milk. I added goji berries, flax seeds and hemp seeds. I washed it down with water and agave nectar.

Pretty standard breakfast this morning: cereal, milk and orange juice.

Around lunchtime I walked over to Whole Foods to get some exercise and a few things. When I got back I had a banana, grapefruit juice, a GoRaw Live Pumpkin Bar (pretty tasty), and a GoHunza Raw Power Bar.

I started the day by playing tennis for a few hours with friends. I brought along water with agave nectar. After that I wandered over to the Noe Valley Farmers Market with Nola. I enjoyed a nectarine and another Juicey Lucy's drink. This time I had a Lil Lucy (banana, mango, and orange juice).

When I got back I cut up a pineapple and it was delicious. I also made some guacamole (avocados, garlic and lime juice) and chips.

For dinner we went to Bakers Square for a birthday party. There wasn't much for me on the menu so I ordered a Caesar salad with no croutons, cheese, dressing or chicken; i.e. romaine lettuce. When we got home I had some more pineapple, a handful of Living Intention's Sun Dried Marinara Almonds & Pistachios, a Gopal's Carob-Quinoa Rawma Bar, and some krisps with raw honey.

I was hoping to visit the Alive! stand but they were not there today so I looked around for other options. I got a 16 oz Juicey Lucy's Moroccan Sunset drink. I also ate a nectarine and a plum and bought a few more to take home. When I got back to the office I had another UliMana Goji Cherry Truffle.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Today is the first day of the second half of the month and I think I have settled into the diet pretty well. According to my digital bathroom scale I am still hovering around 9 lbs under what I started the month at.

For breakfast I had a banana, fresh orange juice and some Living Intentions Cacao Crunch. For lunch I ate some almonds, flax krisps, and cut up a fresh mango. For dinner I had a bowl of cereal and milk. I added goji berries and flax seeds to it. Later I munch on a fresh pickle. I love these pickles!

Well, I have successfully finished the second week on a raw food diet with no known infractions. The bathroom scale suggests that I have lost about 8 lbs since starting this.

More cereal and milk for breakfast today.

For lunch I went for a walk in the neighborhood to see if I could find a juice bar but had no luck so I headed over to Whole Foods instead. I grabbed some grapefruit juice and a Cacao Crunch Bar.

For dinner I started with half a cup of mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries) and added some goji berries, hemp seeds, and flax seeds. I sprinkled some dried agave nectar crystals on it and then poured in 1/2 cup of raw milk. So yummy. I had some "crackers" with raw honey, too. Also very good.

I manage to eat over 2,000 calories today as I was planning to donate blood this evening. I was not able to make it so I will try again tomorrow.

After playing 2 games of softball I had a later dinner. I cut up 2 tomatoes and put some cheese on them with a hint of sea salt and pepper. The sea salt was from Rainbow Grocery and it was a bit odd to me. Basically it was raw ocean salt. I also had some raw sauerkraut - it was purple because it had beets - that tasted pretty good.

Raw Food Diet - Day Twelve

Sunday, July 12, 2009

I had a small breakfast today. A glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice, a kiwi fruit, and an African Red Tea Bar (read more about it here). The bar was very good and now I have to figure out where I bought it so I can get some more.

In the afternoon I headed out to Rainbow Grocery with a laundry list of stuff to buy. I found all kinds of new raw food that I was not expecting: pickles, sauerkraut, and I got some raw whole milk. I also got a bunch of other goods that I needed. I spent at least an hour wandering the store.

When I got back I tried an Alexander Valley Gourmet raw pickle and it was fabulous. I will definitely pick these up on a regular basis.

In the evening I decided it was time to try the milk. I have not had cereal with cow milk in over a decade (normally I have soy or rice milk) so this was a big deal. I picked up some Organic Pastures Raw Whole Milk and ate it with Lydia's Organics Grainless Apple Cereal. If you want to read more about raw whole milk there is this FAQ.

I also tried putting a tablespoon of organic raw blue agave nectar in my ice water. Mmm.

I spent most of Saturday on the couch with Nola draped across my chest. For breakfast I had a Gopal's Happy Herb Bar with Maca. I think I should try to find a maca root to see what it looks and tastes like.

At lunchtime I had the raw equivalent of cheese and crackers. Very nice touch! I also had some mulberries. They are so good and kind of taste like golden raisins (which are normally not considered raw). I enjoyed some more Raweos today (2 at lunch, 2 more at dinner). I probably should not buy any more of those. :D

For dinner I cut up a pineapple and a mango (this one was very good) and had some more cheese and crackers.

For breakfast today I stopped by the local bagel shop to grab some fresh squeezed orange juice. Mmm, so tasty. I also open the bag of Living Intentions Cacao Crunch. It tastes pretty good but I really need to find some raw coconut milk.

According to the scale I gained back 2 lbs since yesterday. :|

Around lunchtime I peeled and cut a mango. It turned out to be a bit spongy which was quite disappointing. It was the third one I had in a week and it was by far the worst. I still need to find some alphonso mangoes. I cannot believe I have not tried one after hearing so much about them. I also had a Hunza Chia Nopal Raw Energy Bar. It was a little spicy but good.

One of my coworkers brought in some fresh green beans from her garden. Those were a great snack. I may have to pick up some at the farmers market this weekend.

In the evening we headed over to Jen & Kenny's place for a BBQ. They cut up a whole bunch of different fruits. Yummy! I also enjoyed a Raweo "cookie" afterward. They taste nothing like Oreos but they are damn good.

Mmm, I enjoyed a grapefruit this morning for breakfast. I have not had one of those in a while. Now, if I could only find a grapefruit spoon.

For lunch today I joined some coworkers at one of the only places I could go - Nama Sushi. I really need to get some Nama Shoyu to make raw fish more palatable. It was still good though.

For dinner I went out with the same group of coworkers to Alive! - a great vegetarian restaurant on Lombard Street - to celebrate a birthday. I had the Raw Carrot Ginger Soup for an appetizer and the Shiitake Mushroom Sun-dried Tomato Torte with Thyme-Parsley Walnut Pesto as my entree. Check out the dinner menu here. The only downside to this was that I did not get the nutritional information for my meal.

According to our digital scale - which I do not trust all that much - I have lost 7 lbs in a week. That seems like a lot but I do not mind as it is one of my goals to lose some weight.

Raw Food Diet - Day Eight

Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Starting my second week on a raw food diet...

An interesting thing happened this morning. I was running late, because someone needed to feed the baby, so after checking my cell phone for the current muni status I saw that taking the J Church inbound was my best option. I rarely take that train because it is a few blocks away and one of the slowest lines in SF. Anyway, I ran down the hill to the muni stop, making it just in time, when I realized I was not out of breath like I normally am. I cannot say for sure this is because of the diet but it would be a great side effect.

Towards the end of breakfast I tried the GoHunza Sun Dried Goji Berries that I bought on Monday. They have a very interesting taste. Initially I would say it might take a little time to get used to the flavor. Goji berries are supposed to be very healthy so I will at least finish the bag before I make up my mind to not buy them again.

After work I headed over to Rainbow Grocery to check out their fabulous raw food section. Indeed it was wonderful; perhaps a bit overwhelming actually. I will go back a few times so that I can start getting used to it. I picked up three bags of random stuff that I will review. In a way I felt a little weird about getting all these things that are considered raw but are not the kind of thing you would imagine people eating a thousand years ago.

I picked up a few bottles of kombucha. I was not all that comfortable with the taste of it so again I will have to see if I can get used to it. First I tried Healing Springs Raw Pineapple Kombucha. I think I would rather have some fresh squeezed pineapple juice.

For dinner I had a few random things including a Gopal Carob-Quinoa Rawma Bar and some Organic Valley Raw Sharp Cheddar Cheese on the crackers I like so much. Turns out Christen does not care for them that much but Paul and a couple of my coworkers agree they are great.

Raw Food Diet - Day Seven

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

The end of my first week on a raw food diet! Interestingly, I realized today that I am starting to feel much better physically.

For breakfast I had GoHunza Really-Raw Mulberry & Walnut Granola. It is pretty tasty. If only I could figure out where to get some raw coconut milk so I did not have to eat it dry. And I am not going anywhere near that raw cow milk I have seen, which is odd because I thought it was illegal in the US but apparently not.

At lunch I had some Flow Foods Chocolatl. Mmm, raw chocolate is good. I also had some more Matter of Flax Whole Life Flax Krisps. Those are so good!

We had dinner at Andrew & Kerry's. She made some great looking vegetarian lasagna but alas I could not have any. This did give me an idea though. I should try to find a recipe for raw lasagna and see what I can come up with. I stopped by the local Japanese restaurant to grab some tuna sashimi and then cut up some mango and tomatoes to eat with it. Which reminds me, it might not be the best thing but I have been enjoying a little sea salt on my tomatoes lately. Otherwise I almost never add salt or pepper to my food.

Back in the office today. Fresh plums from Healdsburg for breakfast; they are so good.

For lunch I headed out to Whole Foods to stock up. While there I found their raw food section and now I feed much better about this raw food diet. :) Tears almost came to my eyes when I saw the raw chocolate - Go Raw Real Live Chocolate. It has a creamy texture and is very edible. The other great find was the Matter of Flax Whole Life Flax Krisps. I got a bunch of other products that I will talk about as I get to them.

For dinner I sliced up two tomatoes and added some sea salt, which I believe is raw, and was reminded of my childhood days when I would take a salt shaker and sneak into a neighbor's garden to pick and eat this wonderful combo.

I cannot wait until tomorrow when I can try some new stuff: raw granola, other raw chocolate goodies, goji berries, etc.

Oh, I also decided to not worry about checking my pH anymore. It seems to hover around 6.5 - 7.

Raw Food Diet - Day Four

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Happy Independence Day!

I got up a little early today to go to the Healdsburg Farmer's Market. I bought some fresh tomatoes, mixed berries and peaches. While there was plenty of good stuff to choose from I still do not have much of a meal plan, and fresh organic produce is expensive, so I figured this was good for now.

After relaxing in the square for a bit I walked over to the Oakville Grocery and found some fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and bananas. Great breakfast. For lunch I ate a half cup of cashew nuts and walnuts again - I am really trying to get my caloric intake a bit higher - and another 16 oz of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.

For dinner I wanted raw tuna again but as it was the 4th of July it was not easy to find. I made a trip back to Oakville Grocery, then Safeway, then Big John's Market and none of them had any. I had looked earlier in the day to see if there were any Japanese restaurants in Healdsburg and luckily there was - Sake 'O. Mmm, fresh tuna. I got a bag of mixed cabbage - only because fresh cabbage was sold out everywhere - and made a nice cole slaw with mango, carrots, olive oil and fresh squeezed lemon.

As you can see below I overdid it today. :|

Raw Food Diet - Day Three

Friday, July 03, 2009

Today was my first full day on the new diet away from home (and the office). I bagged all my fruit and nuts to have a good starting point. On the way in to town last night we stopped at Big John's Market to grab some fresh squeezed orange juice (my favorite!!!), some fruit and a piece of tuna to eat (raw, of course) for dinner. Since Kenny prepared a salad for me last night I decided to eat it tonight.

For breakfast I ate half a cup of walnuts and cashews. That gave me a nice calorie and protein burst to start the day. I still did not manage to eat the minimum recommendations though. For dinner I was going to eat the tuna raw with little garnish but it did not smell as fresh to me as it should - probably because I did not explicitly buy sashimi grade tuna - so I made something similar to ceviche.

I discovered today that WolframAlpha is a fast and simple way to get nutrition information.

Raw Food Diet - Day Two

Thursday, July 02, 2009

I decided to have fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast instead of trying to make a juice the night before since it went so poorly last time. When I get a juicer - a friend recommended Champion so I will put that near the top of my wish list - I will revisit that option. For lunch I went with the other half of a salad from last night.

I drove up to Healdsburg for the holiday weekend and was nicely surprised that Kenny made me a nice salad for dinner. Bok choy, snow peas, tomatoes, green onions, and fresh squeezed orange juice for the sauce.

At the end of the day I totaled up my calories and still I did not get enough calories (1300) or protein (33, 75 is minimum suggested). I was so full I could not eat any more so I know that I have to work harder at eating a bigger breakfast and lunch each day.

In the evening I started searching the web for raw food alternatives to some of the foods and condiments I really want. I came across some great ideas. The best thing I found was raw soy sauce. That is going to make my meals so much better. Another is raw flax seeds and using them as a grain/break substitute. I think having that as an option with salsa and guacamole, and maybe even raw cheese, would be awesome. Things are starting to look up. :)

Raw Food Diet - Day One

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Wow, the first day of my new diet and already I had pretty strong food cravings. I took a stroll through Safeway in the afternoon just to get an idea of what I could eat and what I would be missing for the next month. Almost brought tears to my eyes.

One thing I realized is that I am not getting enough calories so far - 1,551 on 06/30 and only 1,140 today. Though about 800 of those on the 30th came from the crepe I had for my “last meal.” I will work on eating more nuts at meals so that I get more calories and protein (and fat). Another area that I need to monitor more closely is my water intake. Seems I am only drinking about 2 to 4 glasses when I should be having at least 5.

I received some new pH strips that may help me get more accurate alkalinity tests. My first reading was pretty low – around 5.0 – which means I will have to eat more alkaline foods. I will continue to take readings twice a day and see if this was an anomaly or that the previous strips just are not that good.

I definitely need to work on figuring out a) some quick meals and b) raw food equivalents for foods and toppings that I use a lot. I will definitely be eating a lot more salad and will need to discover replacement salad dressings.
